Potting instructions and tips
When to Re-pot
One of the tricks of successful container planting is knowing when
and how to re-pot.
Most healthy plants will outgrow their containers, but it is important
not to re-pot too soon.
It is time to change to a larger container when any of the following
occurs:
- Roots begin to grow out of the drainage holes or appear on soil surface.
- Plant dries out more quickly and wilts between waterings.
- New growth is slow and new leaves are tiny.
- Plant is top-heavy and larger than its container.
Container-size is crucial
Always re-pot into a container that is only one size larger than its
predecessor.
The new pot should be approximately 2.5 to 5 centimetres or 1 to 2 inches
deeper than before, and 2.5 centimetres or 1 inch wider all round.
How to Re-pot
Wash the new pot with a mild soap and rinse thoroughly.
Water your plant in its old container and then remove it by turning it
upside down and tapping the bottom of the pot. If it is difficult to remove,
run a knife around the the inner walls to loosen the soil.
Let the old soil fall away without disturbing the mix that clings to the
roots. Trim any dead, overly-long or badly entangled roots to stimulate
new growth.
Place enough mixture in the bed of the new pot and sit the plant in place.
Fill around the plant up to 2 centimetres or one inch from the lip of
the container. Press mixture lightly to anchor the plant.
Settle the plant further by gently tapping it three times on the ground
or bench.
Finally, water lightly and place in a good growing position.
Plant Maintenance
A few minutes a day will keep your plants healthy and thriving.
Keep plants clean by sponging leaves with warm water every two weeks to
remove dust and possible insects. To maintain plant health and vigour,
clip off faded blossoms and dead or damaged leaves and stems.
Watering
Regular watering will be reduced by up to 30% when you use SOAK'N'FEED
Moisture and Fertiliser Granules. This superb moisture retention and controlled-release
feeding product is pre-mixed into Your
Choice Indoor & Outdoor Premium Mixture.
To save water and maximise growth, simply sprinkle SOAK'N'FEED granules
on all container plants, garden beds, shrubs and lawns.
Top-dressing container plants with SOAK'N'FEED every six months will
deliver maximum results and prolific flowering. Apply every four months
during extended hot spells.
