Importance of Potassium and Sulphur in plant growth
- Potassium is a major plant nutrient and is an essential component
of all living cells and metabolic processes. Potassium also helps plants
utilise other nutrients more efficiently especially Nitrogen and Phosphorus.
- Potassium is required by the plant for respiration and transport of
photosynthesis products. It also plays a vital role in the activation
of many enzymes.
- Potassium requirement is greatest at the end of the growing season
and is important in improving crop quality, fruit size, shape, colour,
firmness and shelf life.
- Sulphur is an essential plant nutrient and is as important as nitrogen
and phosphorus in the formation of protein. Sulphur is also vital for
seed development and may increase crop resistance to some diseases.
Sulphur deficiency results in yellowing of young leaves and delayed
maturity.
- Potassium deficient plants will tend to grow slowly and develop poor
root systems. They are also prone to stress from extremes of temperature,
pests and diseases.
Benefits of using Potassium Sulphate
- Potassium Sulphate contains both Potassium and Sulphur and is ideal
for use in saline soils or where chloride sensitive crops such as tobacco,
berry fruits and some vegetables are being grown.
- Potassium Sulphate is a free flowing highly soluble Potassium source,
ideal for use in fertigation and hydroponics.
- Potassium Sulphate is a more concentrated fertiliser than Potassium
Chloride and is the ideal potassium and sulphur fertiliser for the production
of high quality crops.
